And, paradoxically, the acceptance of one’s negative experience is itself a positive experience. It seems that every where I look on the train, on the beach, in my local bookstore-come-cafe, people are reading it, and more than that they’re recommending it too.Ī friend of mine lent me The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, and while I was already half way through André Aciman’s Call Me By Your Name, I found myself locked out of my apartment as dusk fell on Sunday evening, and so I made my way to my favourite bookstore-come-cafe in Bondi, and settled down for two hours of reading with a chai tea and the background buzz of chatter for company.Ī thought-provoking and inspiring book from the start, Manson has a clear talent at turning the way many of us look at things on their head, and I found the following notion a particularly interesting one: the desire for more positive experience is itself a negative experience. ![]() I’m not entirely sure when The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck was published, but suffice it to say it’s become something of a cult read of late. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments Lissa price starters series![]() Set in the near future, after everyone but the very young and the very old have been killed in a bio-warfare attack, the book opens with Callie, a teenager, deciding to “rent” her body to wealthy seniors wanting to be young again, through the shadowy and mysterious organization called Prime Destinations. I’m so glad that I did, because STARTERS by debut author Lissa Price is a fast-paced thrilling book that I read in just one sitting. But when I realized that a book we were publishing was written by a local Southern California author, a book I had heard much internal buzz about already, I decided to give it a try. I blame this on a combination of factors: no longer being a teen myself, a preference for wistful, angsty contemporary fiction, and a genuine fear of the dark future world depicted in many of these books. I’ve read THE HUNGER GAMES series, but the sea of paranormal, dystopian and fantasy books that crowd bookstore shelves these days leaves me cold. ![]() I will admit right up front that I rarely read dystopian young adult books. ![]() 5/28/2023 0 Comments Emmet Dalton by Sean Boyne![]() ![]() One tactic was to ambush army convoys and it was during one of those ambushes that Michael Collins lost his life at Bealnablath. The author describes the attempts made by Dalton to restore normality in the face of armed men who were now using the methods that had been developed during the war with the English. This book is a reminder of how close Ireland came in 1922 to descending into chaos in the name of a semi-mystical devotion to a republic. The army quickly took back control of the city and the main towns, and were enthusiastically welcomed by the local people who were fed up with the bullying tactics of the Irregulars. Their leader was the 24-year old General Emmet Dalton. ![]() In an effort to exert control, the Free State government sent about 1000 men of the newly created Irish army by sea from Dublin to recapture the county and restore order. There was nothing that ordinary people could do about this lawlessness. Roving bands burned houses and farm buildings, particularly those owned by people, many of them Protestants, who were deemed to have been unsympathetic to the national cause in the recently-ended War of Independence. The anti-Treaty forces controlled law and order as well as civic affairs, taking over barracks and collecting customs revenue. 2016Īt the height of the Irish Civil War, Cork city and county were outside the control of central government in Dublin. Once clean, Susan dedicated her life to supporting women facing similar struggles. On her own, she eventually found a private drug rehabilitation facility. She cycled in and out of prison for over 15 years never was she offered therapy or treatment for addiction. We see Jasper’s boarding school days in the 1950s melting into his infancy his father’s wedding in the 1930s segueing into the elder de Zoet’s childhood adventures with a kite scenes from the Boer War (“a bloody, stupid mess”) dissolving into images of horse-drawn carriages then colonial plantations in Java, Dutch East India Company ships sailing into Japanese waters finally a trading post, a monastery, a room filled with corpses. In a psychedelic moment toward the end of David Mitchell’s new novel, “Utopia Avenue,” which is about the birth, rise and demise of a British rock band in the 1960s, the long and lurid family history of one of the band members - a preternaturally talented, half-British, half-Dutch guitarist named Jasper de Zoet - unspools, filmlike, before his astonished eyes, all the way back to the late 18th century as it does so, another character murmurs that “the chain of events would fill a hefty novel.” Indeed. ![]() |
